When you’re a fan of artists who make unadorned, intimate music, seeing them live can sometimes be a frustrating experience as you’re forced to rub shoulders with a seemingly infinite number of strangers who whisper and fidget through your favourite songs’ most tender moments. Therefore, it’s a huge boon that Angel Place’s City Recital Hall (capacity: a shade over 1,200) have landed a performance from the man who arguably kickstarted the 21st Century’s singer/songwriter explosion. If you like your guitar acoustic and your lyrics nakedly candid, you’re almost definitely a Rice devotee and, while he may not be enjoying the same level of commercial success right now as he did a few years back, he’s lost none of the spellbinding intensity that have made his live performances so renowned.
