Sydney’s most iconic building is hitting the big 5-0 this year and our city has some major festivities in store to mark the occasion. Among them is the Museum of Sydney’s celebratory series of free late-night musical performances that coincide with the Museum’s latest exhibition, The People’s House: Sydney Opera House at 50.
You’ve got lots of reasons to stay and play in the city after the sun sets as the Museum of Sydney keeps its lights from 5-8pm on the second Thursday of every month until November. Each night, The People’s House: Up Late will showcase a new genre of musical talents, ranging from classical and contemporary to future icons and soulful voices of the city. Best of all, entry is free.
The concert series kicks off on August 10 with classical performances from operatic soprano Sandra Liu accompanied by pianist Paula Lu; the Jack Ward String Quartet; and harpist Paul Nicolaou. On September 14, the theme flips to contemporary with performances from flamenco band Bandaluzia; Japanese taiko drumming duet YuNiOn; and Indigenous violinist and vocalist Eric Avery.
The People’s House: Up Late program continues on October 12 with a celebration of the future icons of Sydney Opera House featuring the city’s top emerging performers, and will culminate with a dynamic night of passion and funk by Soul of Sydney on November 9.
Performance is the beating heart of the Sydney Opera House, making this concert series a fitting tribute to the history of Australia’s busiest performing arts centre. Pre or post-performance, you can explore half a century of history of our cultural icon at The People’s House: Sydney Opera House at 50 exhibition, and enjoy delicious bites and beverages from This Way Canteen.
