If you’re keen to soak up the character, cultures and soul of our city then we’ve got some good news for you. Museums of History of NSW (MHNSW) is now offering free entry to their museums and historical houses until September. Plus, they’ve extended their opening hours, giving you more time to delve into the fascinating heritage they preserve. Whether you embark on a captivating journey to Sydney’s dark side of crime, policing and punishment at Justice and Police Museum or escape to the picturesque gardens at Vaucluse House, there is lots of history waiting to be uncovered.

MHNSW is our state’s ‘home’ of history for unravelling the narratives of our past, while shaping the experiences that await us in the future. You could spend one day for almost a fortnight visiting each of MHNSW’s 13 museums and historical houses. Hyde Park Barracks is a great place to start and if you visit before June 4, make sure to check out Murmurations – this year’s annual art commission created in response to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed site’s history as a hub of forced migration.

The city is your playground at the Museum of Sydney, where kids can build and re-imagine the future with their limited-time PlayScapes exhibition. Afterwards, step back in time at the Mint, which was Sydney’s former Rum Hospital and the CBD’s oldest surviving public building.  Inside, you'll discover the Caroline Simpson Library, a treasure trove for those fascinated by house and garden design, interior furnishings and domestic life in NSW.

MHNSW also has an impressive portfolio of historic homes including the elegant 1835 mansion Elizabeth Bay House, stately farmhouse Rouse Hill Estate and 1950 modernist masterpiece Rose Seidler House

We’ve got the NSW Government to thank for this exciting initiative, which runs until September 2023. Beat the queues by booking your free tickets in advance here

Plan your next free outing at one of MHNSW’s museums and historical houses.
