Originally built in the late 1930s and now one of the Eight Hotels group, owner of various budget boutique operations in Sydney, the Kirketon had a major refurbishment in 2007. Rooms today come with nice touches such as chocolates and Kevin Murphy toiletries, and the overall design is contemporary minimalist, with rich colours and slick bathrooms with showers. The dining room and bar – where chef Eric Tan serves ultra-modern international cuisine – remain popular with locals. Bar. Concierge. Internet (wireless). No smoking. Parking ($25). Restaurant. TV (cable/DVD/VCR). Rates $220-$365 double. Rooms 40. Credit AmEx, DC, MC, V.
