Now entering its 34th year, Flickerfest showcases the best short films from at home and across the world. In January 2025, the Academy Awards-accredited and BAFTA-recognised short film festival will return to the newly restored Bondi Pavilion for ten incredible days and nights, before touring the nation. A record-breaking 3,500 entries were received this year and whittled down to the top 200, which are set to inspire and entertain audiences with fresh and innovative stories across 28 dedicated festival sessions from January 17-26.

Grab some popcorn and a drink from the palm-fringed Flickerfest Bar, then settle in under the stars (or beat the heat indoors) and enjoy a showcase of handpicked short films at Australia’s largest short film festival.

With so many shorts on offer, it’s hard to know where to start – here are our top five picks.

Vlog

Sydney-born actress and star of The Handmaid’s Tale Yvonne Strahovski, takes the spotlight as the writer, director, and star of Vlog — a 17-minute short about a mommy vlogger navigating the chaos of #momlife alongside her rising social media fame.

Candy Bar

Acclaimed actor and director Nash Edgerton (Gringo) reunites with Mr Inbetween star Damon Herriman for their latest collaboration. Making its world premiere, the duo’s wild and wonderful short film Candy Bar tells the story of a young girl who becomes convinced that a man in the candy bar line is her father.

Glove

Australian actress Belinda Bromilow makes her directorial debut with Glove, an unpredictable story about a young woman whose unusual passions lead her to the man of her dreams.

The Brown Dog

Night after night, a watchman clocks in at a lonely security booth in the deserted parking lot of an upscale apartment complex — until one evening, he leaves his post in search of a mysterious brown dog. Voiced by the late Michael K. Williams (The Wire), this mesmerising short features an exceptional team of collaborators, including Pulitzer Prize-nominated composer Tyshawn Sorey and acclaimed actor Steve Buscemi, who lends his voice to another character.

Hearts Of Stone

Alongside the finest short films in competition from Australia, audiences can also enjoy top European films including Hearts Of Stone from Belgium. This 30-minute short, written and directed by Tom van Avermaet and starring Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), is an ode to love and overcoming obstacles.
