Delve into the history of the world of cinema with David Stratton’s latest course at the University of Sydney's Centre for Continuing Education.

Join the At the Movies film critic with an encyclopedic knowledge of cinema as he takes you through a period in cinematic history. For his first 12-week course in 2019, Stratton will focus on cinematic works in the period 1968-1969.

The course has run twice a year for ten years and each time Stratton covers a different period in cinematic history. Past course content has included the rise of cinema across the world; the invention of the Blacklist (which saw industry professionals barred from work as a result of allegations of communist links); the transformation from a square screen to a rectangle; the first appearance of James Bond; and the rise of censorship and classifications.

Stratton's course explores the history of the silver screen across the world through talks and screenings of the films in discussion. Delve into politics and social movements, shifts in attitudes and cultures as they played out in film.

The course runs from Thursday, January 31 to Thursday, April 18, and sessions are three hours long, from 6.30pm until 9.30pm. Most classes feature a full-length movie followed by discussion, and all take place at the main University of Sydney campus. Places are $325 per person.

This is just the latest of David Stratton’s highly anticipated film courses, with others centring around topics like the works of Gregory Peck and Alfred Hitchcock. As well as his co-hosting gig on At the Movies which ended in 2014, he was the director of the Sydney Film Festival between 1966 and 1983, and has reviewed films for The Australian, as well as having written several books including The Last New Wave and the recently released 101 Marvellous Movies You May Have Missed. If you're a die-hard film fan, you’ll be left in capable hands.
