Time Out says

The vibe

Established in 2012, Young Henrys is a rock'n'roll-style brewery and distillery (yep, they also make an award-winning gin) – and one of Sydney’s best. Located in a warehouse-like space in the backstreets of Newtown, it’s open daily from noon until 7pm, drawing in everyone from bearded, tatted-up guys to families catching up over a cold one. While their popularity has soared over the years, their goal has always remained the same: to brew beer that the local community would enjoy and be proud to call their own. And we reckon they’ve succeeded (and then some) – you’d be hard-pressed to find an Inner Westie who’s not a big fan of a frosty Newtowner.

Other than making bloody good beer, the Young Henrys crew are true leaders in the sustainability movement. A few fun facts for you: their Newtown brewery is 100 per cent powered by renewable energy. They donate all their spent grain (what’s leftover after brewing beer) to local farms, where it gets eaten by happy cattle – in turn supporting Aussie farmers and reducing waste. Now this is cool: thanks to cutting-edge technology, they're working with algae to lower emissions, with the aim of making brewing a more carbon-neutral process. And their effort and commitment has been recognised on a global scale – Young Henrys is proudly B Corp certified.

The food

On the weekends, Young Henrys collaborates with mates and local food trucks, who serve up great beer-friendly eats – like juicy burgers and loaded tacos – out the front of the brewery. You’re not really coming here for the food, though. You come here for the excellent beer, fun vibes and to catch up. Ravenous? Head to nearby Enmore for a feed – Chinese Dumpling Master, Emma’s Snack Bar and Cairo Takeaway are some of our faves.

The drinks

On the 11-tap line-up, you’ll find Young Henrys’ classics – like their Natural Lager, Hazy Pale Ale and IPA – as well as limited-release brews (including small-batch experimental numbers) and collabs with local brewers. If it’s your first time here, you gotta order their flagship: the Newtowner. An Aussie pale ale, it’s hoppy, fun, fruity – and best enjoyed at sunset at a barefoot barbecue or on your way to have a boogie. We’re also fans of their ginger beer, which isn’t too sweet and is thirst-quenching over ice.

Time Out tip

Young Henrys is a three-minute walk from The Enmore Theatre, so it’s a cracking place for a pre-drink (or three) before you catch a comedy show or gig.
