As far as birthday presents go, it doesn’t get much better than this. On the cusp of its fifth anniversary, the beer company founded by none other than Mr Bob Hawke himself has thrown open the doors to a flagship venue in the heart of Marrickville.

The Bob Hawke Beer and Leisure Centre – christened in honour of the company’s late namesake – is a sprawling, cathedral-esque site, capable of holding up to 300 people. It boasts large steel brew tanks, a full service bar, separate pool room area (loaded with Australiana memorabilia and modelled on Hawke’s very own pool room) and a Chinese-Australian bistro, the Lucky Prawn.

Developed in collaboration with Nicholas Wong, the Lucky Prawn is a delightful throwback to the RSL clubs and pubs of the ‘80s – but with a modern twist, of course. All of the dishes have been designed to share with friends, and the culinary highlights include the san choy bao, honey prawns, special fried rice and (brace yourself) deep-fried Vienetta.

And in honour of this mammoth multi-room establishment opening to the public, there is a competition running on the Hawke's Beer and Leisure Centre Instagram page that is offering two very lucky people the chance to win an all-expenses paid sesh at the venue. The prize includes a food and drink package for four people, while five runners-up will score themselves a slab of Hawke’s beer.To enter, simply head to the Insta, give it a follow and tag three friends you’d like to have a beer and bite with – good luck!

So if you’re after a new watering hole where there’s always a fresh coldie and welcoming spot for your four-legged friend waiting for you, this is it. After all, that’s how Hawke would’ve liked it.

The Bob Hawke Beer and Leisure Centre is now open. For more information or to make a booking, head to the website.
