If you've ever wanted to have a beer with Bob Hawke, this just maybe is the next best thing. The affable Labor politician and former prime minister, in collaboration with Hawkes Brewing Co and Landcare Australia, has produced a one-off brew aptly named Hawke’s Lager.
You can try it yourself at 11 venues including the Clock Hotel (where Hawke recently poured the debut brew), Public House Petersham, the Clovelly Hotel and the Sackville Hotel in Rozelle, before it's rolled out to the rest of the country.
The beer is made from 100 per cent Australian ingredients and Hawkey won't receive any financial benefit from the beer – instead, he will be donating his profits to Landcare, which supports rural aid initiatives across Australia.
The young Bob Hawke was famous for having broken the world record for drinking a yard glass of ale, in just 11 seconds, while he was studying at Oxford in the UK on a Rhodes Scholarship. As prime minister for most of the 1980s, his larrikin personality made him hugely popular. It's high time a brew was named in his honour.
