The former Institute of Hellenic Dance and Culture has been turned into a local watering hole and live music venue called the Great Club. The Club is the latest project from Alison Avron and Brooke Olsen, who were behind teeny tiny music venue, the Newsagency, and Marrickville gig warehouse, Dirty Shirlows. Their new joint venture is one of those 'community lounge room' venues where you could see yourself popping in on the reg for a piano bar session, a cheeky burlesque show or a trivia night. Imagine the welcoming spirit of an RSL, without the pokies or vintage politics. It's both accessible and family-friendly, with $10 cocktails on Fridays and Saturdays, a Sunday roast, and classic counter meals with that Inner West aesthetic, like kingfish ceviche, twice-cooked pork belly, fried chicken and polenta chips. Live music is set to launch in 2021 with an ecclectic, community-focused and diverse line-up.
