Where to drink mulled wine in Sydney

Warm up with a spicy glass of Glühwein

A cold glass of cider has the potential to stem a force five hangover, but in the depths of Sydney's winter, a hot drink makes a night on the town a welcoming prospect, especially if it means nursing a glass of red; sweetened with orange juice, spiked with sweet baking spices, and warmed up so that you don't need mittens. In fact, winter drinking is some of Sydney's best, so head out for a hot drink that will provide a bigger kick than your standard cuppa.

Winter in Sydney can be a shocker. We've even made a list of all the annual shocks when the temperature drops.

Where to drink mulled wine on a cold Sydney night

It makes sense that a venue so deeply committed to the treasures of the UK would venture just a little further abroad to bring mugs of Germanic mulled wine to their winter menu. As with all things at the Duke of Clarence, this one is a cracker and it'll be very easy to whittle away the hours with a warm glass and a comfy Chesterfield.

  • The Rocks

A heritage listed sandstone bar in the Rocks is a logical place to find yourself the old-timey drink of mulled wine and the Doss House is delivering in spades. The winter warmers menu is rich in mulled Wine, hot whiskey and Irish coffee to warm up.

  • Redfern

Let this Redfern favourite sooth your winter blues with the smell of cloves, anise and cinnamon while you sip away the cold with a tasty mulled wine. There are always a few stouts on the taps too if you're looking for another great winter winner.

  • Surry Hills

This well-worn boozer has seen more winters than most, so it makes sense that the Keg and Brew keeps things cosy and simple through the chilly months. While they're technically not doing mulled wine, their cider equivalent is equally delightful and has all the warmth of the vino counterpart.

  • Erskineville

The Hive Bar is the beating heart of Erskineville’s small but solid bar scene. Set in between the Erskineville Hotel and the Rose of Australia, it brings small bar chic to a village that has historically been dominated by pubs, and does a damn fine job of it. Keeping in the community spirit, the Hive is giving the people what they want this winter with mulled wine aplenty.

  • Marrickville

As well as being a top music venue, the Gasoline Pony is a great place for a meal and a quiet (or not so quiet) drink with friends. The same goes for winter when they'll be slinging mulled wine with all the classic aromats of a northern Christmas.

There are few nights we don't want to spend propping up the bar at this cracking neighbourhood haunt in Redfern. The smell of their Gunthers Gluhwein, made with cab merlot, cinnamon and cloves, perfumes the air. It's the perfect foil for a wintry night.

  • Chippendale

Being equi-distant between two major universities means this beloved corner boozer has a lot of fans, and the recent refresh hasn't hurt their appeal. Warm up after a long day hitting the books with a glass of mulled wine, that gets an extra wintry kick from a lug of brandy, plus sweet spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.

The Winery
The Winery

The Winery is always packed. It doesn’t matter if it’s a school night, Sunday afternoon or just gone 5pm, people cannot get enough of the Crown Street drinking hole. And that goes for winter too, when your wine times come hot and spicy with mulled wine made with Jacob’s Creek Double Barrel shiraz (it's a wine finished in whisky barrels).

  • Pubs
  • Glebe
  • price 2 of 4

The venue formerly known as the Aussie Youth Hotel has undergone a deep clean, a reboot, and is sporting a new name that will ensure fewer people confuse it with a backpackers. They're also serving a classic mulled wine by the glass, spiced with cinnamon sticks, star anise, and sweetened with orange juice.

The Duck Inn Pub and Kitchen

This cosy neighbourhood standby in Chippo is serving up mugs of the good stuff, and they're tight-lipped about the "secret French recipe." Gather the squad, make a night of it and order a few rounds to go with a whole slow-roasted lamb shoulder.

  • Sydney
  • price 2 of 4

This inner-city wine bar has your cold weather concoctions on lock, with mulled wine for $10 a glass. They've been heating up courtyard drinking in the CBD with the same recipe for the last eight years – it uses 12 ingredients, and one of them is Nutella.
