Perched just above Circular Quay and boasting vistas that make you feel proud to live in Sydney, Hacienda has long been a go-to for cocktails with a side of harbour views. But we weren’t big fans of the fake plants, and the bar (formerly known as Hyde Hacienda) never captured the hearts of locals. That may now change, as the waterside lounge has had a beautiful, grown-up transformation, now sporting stylish interiors, zesty cocktails and a fresh Latin American-inspired menu overseen by a former Aria and Shell House chef.
The sun-filled, pared-back space now features an earthy colour palette with lots of textures, lush greenery and floor-to-ceiling windows allowing you to take in the big blue. Come night, Hacienda dazzles with live bands playing Afro-Cuban jazz and soulful Latin music.
The food, overseen by executive chef Jiwon Do and Rosy Scatigna (ex-Bar Morris, Shell House and Aria), features Latin American flavours through a modern Australian lens. Menu highlights include an impressive harbour seafood platter; lobster and prawn tostadas; manchego arepas with Fancy Hank's hot sauce; and buttermilk fried chicken with chipotle. Bigger numbers include swordfish a la plancha with a tomatillo salsa verde; and Hacienda’s signature club sandwich. Desserts wise, we like the sound of the tequila and white chocolate ‘bon bon’ and there’s fresh gelato from Redfern’s Ciccone & Sons.
Bright and zesty cocktails are the go here, like the Picante (Los Arcos Blanco tequila, jalapeño, coriander, lime and agave); or the Pisco Disco (Barsol Pisco, pineapple, limoncello and soda). Come for golden hour, Tuesday to Friday, 4-6pm, and snap up $15 Margs – including the Picante, the classic Tommy’s or the smoky Fuma – and deals on snacks. We’re also told there’s a French fries service.
