From the outside, the Glengarry Castle Hotel, with its unmistakable original tiling out front, looks as old school as ever. Inside, it’s much the same story – there’s sport on the telly, VB on the taps and chicken schnitties on the pass. But look closer and there’s shades of the new appearing at this 19th century establishment. On the blackboard are all the pub classics, from rib eye steaks to barbecue chicken wings and fish and chips, but the kitchen’s also nodding to more modern tastes. The steak sanga is made with Wagyu sirloin, and vegetarians are looked after with a tofu burger. There’s even a salmon poke bowl, topped with corn salsa, avocado, roasted nori seaweed, coconut rice and soy ginger dressing. Whatever type of feed you go for, $12 lunches and $6 schooners of Young Henrys and Grifter Brewing Co are hard to argue with. The pram pushers aren’t left out of the equation: all ages are welcome and children eat for free before 7pm.
