If saying “gin joint” out loud makes you feel like an old fart, or if you think the juniper spirit is solely for lonely housewives, the Establishment's Gin Garden will make you think again. Although there's a definite colonial theme inside the bar, this venue is slick and modern. Gin Garden seems to take most of its light from candles, with a few bulbs in pear-shaped birdcages, and has a gentler atmosphere to the Establishment proper alongside it. It's a little fern-filled oasis where ambient dance/jazz and a constantly burbling fountain should coo you into relaxation – as should the Plymouth Navy Strength gin, one of over two dozen kinds available behind the bar. The signature cocktail list is nearly as ambitious as the giant potted bamboo plants that are trying oh-so-gamely to reach the roof behind the bar.
