A trip to Western Sydney Parklands is best started nice and early. With over 70km of tracks and trails, picnic areas and parks across three local council areas – Blacktown, Fairfield and Liverpool – you won’t want to leave your running shoes behind for this epic day out.
Fitness fanatics can test their skills on a cycle through bushlands, or by prepping for the inaugural Parklands Running Festival, which will be held on June 9 in collaboration with Race Hub Australia. For those after a more gentle exercise, book in for a yoga session or bush bathing in the parklands.
Meet up with the whole family where the kids can let loose at the nature-themed playground Lizard Log or enjoy a moment of solitude on a stroll while partaking in some birdwatching. With so many trails and tracks on offer (ranging from 30 minutes to three hours across gravel, grass, paved or farm roads) you’ll be spoilt for choice. Plus, each walk is graded an easy one to three on the National Walking Track Graded System (levels 1-5) so the kids can tag along too. Explore all the tracks with these digital maps but if you're not sure where to start, head out on the short but rewarding Sugarloaf Ridge walk for skyline views or for something more challenging try the one and a half hour Spotted Gums Loop, be sure to keep your eyes open for a friendly kangaroo or wallaby along the way.
For those who prefer activities to exercise, mindful weaving circles are available to join, or get your hands dirty on a Trailside Planting Day planting session to reconnect with nature. You can also explore the park's newest 11km bushwalk the Gabrugal Yana, which includes trees with artwork by First Nations artists and is accompanied by audio interpretations.
Don’t be scared off by all this activity: the park is also teeming with those just looking for a shady spot to snooze, read a book or unwind. Even in peak season, when it seems every Sydneysider wants their own secluded spot, the vast area means there’s enough to go around.
