When long-time surfer Eugene Tan began emailing photos of the waves and surfers of Bondi Beach to friends some 14 years ago, he had no idea his little project would evolve to anything as big as Aquabumps. Today, 51,000 people subscribe to his daily email newsletter – featuring pictures he’s taken that morning in Bondi (or, if on holidays, in Tahiti, the Maldives, Fiji...) – and thousands pour into the gallery to see the images up on the wall. There’s been a book – 2010’s A Day at Bondi – and there’s another one on the way in October. And there’s a partnership with Havaianas: the new line of Aquabumps thongs come out in August. Why did his little project take off? “It’s been popular because it’s grown organically,” says Tan. “It’s a hand-selected group of likeminded people who all have one thing in common: they love the beach."
