Opened in 1952, the Théâtre de Beaulieu was built to fill a gap in Lausanne’s cultural scene, providing the city with a large capacity multi-purpose venue for theatre, opera, dance, variety, classical music and general spectacle. And despite being a small city, the artistically rich nature of Lausanne means there’s plenty of locally-grown talent to show off on its stage. It’s a base for the internationally respected Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, which plays a season of concerts there. The Béjart Ballet, a long-time Lausanne resident, makes time amid its international touring schedule to visit Beaulieu each winter, while every February you can see young dancers perform as part of the prestigious ballet competition Prix de Lausanne. The theatre also welcomes European opera and dance productions, plus variety and comedy acts.
