Samnaun, a chalet-dotted village in Graubünden, hosts perhaps the loveliest of Switzerland’s new year celebrations – especially for those who like being in the great outdoors. You’ll need to wrap up warm, wear your hiking boots – and be sure not to forget your sledge. After a 45-minute hike to a secluded forest hut, you’ll be welcomed by a cauldron of mulled wine heating over a fire. If you’re tipsy by the time the fireworks are set off at midnight, the subsequent sledge ride back into the valley is sure to sober you up. There is a maximum of 100 participants, so early booking is required via samnaun@engadin.com. Participation is free, but you must bring your own sledge.
