Renowned among Sherlock Holmes fans around the world, the Giessbach Falls also have another claim to fame: the funicular that travels to them is Switzerland’s oldest that is still in operation. Opened in 1879, the creaky Giessbach Funicular in the Bernese Oberland has undergone some modernisation, but it still has a nostalgic charm with its wooden seats and stripy curtains. Nifty, it conquers 93 metres’ altitude within four minutes.
