For one week in January, the alpine resort town of Kandersteg recreates a the magic of the Belle Epoque in the snow. With period costumes, "culinary nostalgia" and winter sports from bygone times such as wooden ski events, open-air curling and vintage sledge racing, this event appeals to all ages. As well as the sporting events there's musical performances, turn-of-the-century tea dances, balls and candlelit dinners. Plus the open-air Bar Magique is open all week for gluwhein, absinthe or a cup of tea.
Nothing to wear? You can rent costumes from several locations aound town. But before you get togged out, make sure you book ahead for the various events, as they're very popular.
