Zurich’s main shopping street, the Bahnhofstrasse, is illuminated for Christmas in a switch-on ceremony at 6pm. The so-called Lucy lights (named after the Beatles song apparently) may not quite look like diamonds in the sky but the thousands of coloured LED lights create a fair approximation. To add to the switch-on festivities, shops are open extra late, until 10pm, food stalls cater for peckish spectators and temporary stages around town and in the train station host music and entertainment.
