For decades, Café Schober in the Niederdorf was the only true competitor of Sprüngli on Paradeplatz, offering just as much frill and cakes, chocolates of comparable (some would say better) quality. Since Michel Péclard, one of Zurich's gastronomic whirlwinds, has taken over the establishment, it has lost a lot of its original charm but is still a lovely place for coffee and cake - most of all on a summer day when its shady courtyard offers relief from the heat.
