Slip your belt buckle down a notch, start smacking those lips, and prepare to do some serious eating. The Food Zurich festival is coming to town once again from May 16 to 26, bringing some 140 food-related events to the city.
Since its first edition in 2016, Food Zurich has grown to become Switzerland’s biggest food festival, attracting around 75,000 visitors last year. And this time round it’s taking a major step forward as it moves to a brand-new 700m2 HQ on Europaallee in the heart of town. There you’ll find a restaurant tent with pros cooking up a storm each evening – everything from a ten-course vegan meal to specialities by celebrity chefs – as well as market stalls, kitchen workshops, and a bar – ideal for dropping by to see what’s going on.
‘It’s very open,’ says festival co-director Simon Mouttet. ‘You can just come without having a ticket.’
Now on its fourth edition, there’s barely no aspect of the city’s culinary creativity that Food Zurich doesn’t cover. Almost 400 restaurants, producers and manufacturers will be organising events, from sommelier competitions to insect cooking masterclasses, while over 40 city eateries will be offering festival menus based on 2019’s theme of ‘pairing’. And that’s not to forget the Zurich Street Food Festival under the big top at the Hardturm stadium site.
‘The highlight for me is the whole diversity,’ says Mouttet.
