Deciding on your holiday digs is quite a big task. Are you looking for somewhere romantic? Somewhere practical? Somewhere you can be right in the centre of the action or somewhere as far removed from human contact as physically possible? A study by Switzerland Tourism and HotellerieSuisse has found that a guest spends more than 50 percent of the time during a holiday in their accommodation, so when you're booking your trip you want to make sure you’re staying somewhere as special as possible.

With this in mind, Switzerland Tourism has curated its accommodation recommendations into nine specific categories. Whether you need a break in Swiss nature or a romantic spa retreat, Switzerland Tourism offers a unique range of hotels and lodgings as diverse as the country itself. And to make booking your holiday as smooth as possible, we’re spotlighting nine stunning places to stay that fit within each of them, taking the guesswork out of the process and inspiring your next stay.

Spa and wellness

Craving a little R&R? These places offer their guests the chance to practice self-care in glorious surroundings. Whether you fancy trail running, outdoor yoga, altitude training or a holistic retreat made up of bathing and saunas, these places will help you to fully disconnect from the outside world and just focus on yourself.

Time Out recommends: Hotel Eden Roc, Ascona
This five-star resort stands out for its spaciousness and unrivalled views, as it’s perched right on the edge of Lake Maggiore in Ascona. This then acted as inspiration for its luxurious wellness centre, which offers a steam bath, Finnish sauna, seven treatment rooms and a dedicated hairdressing salon – how glam.

Typically Swiss

Flowering meadows, romantic patrician villas with lake views, cosy mountain hotels with views of glaciers and peaks – this is how you picture Switzerland. And you know what? It’s actually possible to live inside a postcard (even just for a little bit) by booking a charming hotel full of character and warm hospitality.

Time Out recommends: Hotel Alpenland, Lauenen
This hotel comes decked out in classic Alpine styling, with 20 fully-furnished double rooms with private bathrooms and balconies. Spend your days exploring the nearby nature reserve or buying trinkets in the village of Lauenen, returning only to tuck into local rösti and cheese specialities at the onsite restaurant.

If the accommodation is special, the trip is special

Your choice of accommodation is vitally important to a successful trip. Switzerland Tourism and HotellerieSuisse commissioned a Geneva-based research company to survey people who had stayed in a Swiss hotel for leisure purposes. A full 62 percent of respondents stated that they had spent more than twelve hours a day in a hotel. A large majority of all hotel guests surveyed in Switzerland (73 percent), regardless of their origin, agree with the following statement: ‘If the accommodation is good, the trip is good too’. That’s why Switzerland Tourism is helping you book somewhere incredible, based on the style, location and specialism of the available accommodation.
