If you’d enjoy being stranded in beautiful isolation half way up a mountain, then the Berghaus Bort is the place to stay. In winter it’s only accessible by skiing down a black run or by taking the cable car (it’s near the middle station on the Grindelwald-First gondola) which stops running at 4pm, so once you’re there, you’re there for the night. Luckily, it’s a gorgeous place to be stranded. The hotel provides half board in its alpine-typical restaurant complete with Swiss ‘stübli’ (rustic chalet style area), and in the morning the views from the breakfast room are a stunning sight to wake up to. If you’re quick you can head out bright and early to be first on the ski slopes, making fresh tracks before those staying in the village down below have even finished their croissants.
