The country’s second biggest carnival after Basel, Rabadan’s five days of festivities attract 150,000 people to the tiny town of Bellizona to eat, drink and party. As is tradition, the fun starts after a mock ‘king’ is given the keys to the city – carte blanche to do exactly as he pleases. Over the next five days there’s a children’s parade, a night of live music from local bands and a huge procession of 50 floats and numerous costumed participants on the Sunday. Things come to a pleasing end the following Tuesday when an enormous risotto is cooked for a lunchtime communal feast.
