A hotel with a ‘History’ section on their website that’s actually worth a read? One stay at Bank Hotel will have you fully invested in its origin story, which began in 1910 when the art nouveau building served as the head office of Södra Sverige Banking. It’s since housed a succession of banks before gaining a new lease of life come the hotel’s grand opening in 2018, in a bid to turn Stockholm’s business district into more of a social hub. In keeping with this mission, the five-star institution has established itself as a firm favourite for locals and tourists to grab a libation by combining its boutique charm with late-night, award-winning cocktails. And the result? A buzzing atmosphere for guests and a sense that all those staying are honourary Stockholm socialites.
Despite its aura of exclusivity, the team behind Bank Hotel want nothing more than for guests to feel at home. That much was clear from the attentiveness from staff, as well as the warm and welcoming interiors; the lobby is enveloped by mahogany panelled walls, paired with diamond pattern flooring for a timeless look. Original details of the old bank remain, from iron doors and gates to the show-stopping vault-turned-wine cellar, to remind everyone of the opulent building’s humble beginnings.
The classic design continues into the sumptuous bedrooms – each made to mimic the comfort and familiarity of one's own home (or dream home, in my case). My 8th-floor room was anything but spill-proof, with cream carpets and matching muted-toned furnishings creating a sanctuary comparable to the sleeping quarters you’re likely to experience beyond the pearly gates. Off-white walls completed the heavenly look, with a light brown headboard and bright blue painting adding depth to the space. It was pristine and plush, with the city views from the large bay windows adding another layer of luxury.
Aside from its three beautiful bars earning their place on the ‘Stockholm Nightlife Hot List’, the restaurant – playfully named ‘Bonnie’s’ after bank-robbing duo Bonnie and Clyde – is also a big hit, largely due to its beloved brunch that’s known for being booked up well in advance. Luckily guests get a guaranteed spot on the reservation list with breakfast-included bookings; a fancier affair than most, you’ll be treated to a continental buffet presented on silver platters, best enjoyed in a velvet booth from a white cloth-laden table. Cooked dishes can be ordered from the menu at no extra charge; I went for the cheese and prosciutto omelette, which was perfection.
It’s easy to get swept up in the grandeur of this place, but its integrity outweighs its need to impress, making for an experience that’s luxurious without all the stuffiness that often comes with a five-star stay – so much so that you wouldn’t even feel self-conscious ordering a grilled cheese sandwich to your penthouse suite at 3am (and yes, that is an option).
