May Day also known as International Worker’s Day or Labour Day is a celebration that takes place every 1st of May to salute the workers. In Sri Lanka, May Day is a public holiday and celebrations are often held in major towns and cities with the largest usually taking place in Colombo. Furthermore, there is often a political aspect to May Day celebrations in Sri Lanka and during the period; it is common to see political leaders taking part in rallies where workers take to the streets carrying signs and banners while chanting political slogans.
