Believed to be one of the earliest Arab settlements in Sri Lanka, Beruwala wears the remnants of it proud past though it has gained fame as a beach destination in the present times. The Kechimalai Mosque built by the pioneering Arab travellers to the country, the tallest seated Buddha statue in Kande Viharaya and Brief Gardens designed by Bevis Bawa are reasons why Beruwala finds an indispensable place in every traveller’s itinerary. The Beruwala fishing harbour is a lively place to visit and teems with fishermen with their catch, bargaining buyers and travellers who find fun in the pandemonium.
