The great Indian composer, songwriter, music producer, multi instrumentalist and philanthropist, A R Rahman will be in Colombo this month. The Grammy Award winning artist is famous for his eastern classical music, electronic music sounds, world music genres and traditional orchestral arrangements.

Rahman made his debut in the Tamil movie ‘Roja’, and since then ever-sensational music has grown widely in popularity, capturing the hearts of people across the world.

Having started his career at the age of nine, Rahman composed music for several languages, including Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil and more.
He is one of Asia’s most celebrated music icons to deliver constant hit music compositions, which have delivered back-to-back hits and keeps going on! Skilled in Carnatic, western classical and Hindustani musical traditions Rahman has collaborated with many international artistes including Michael Jackson, Michael Bolton, Vanessa Mae, Sarah Brightman, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Dido, Akon and more.

His first soundtrack for Roja was listed in Time’s “10 Best Soundtracks” of all time in 2005 and in 2009 Time placed Rahman in its list of World’s Most Influential People. He also garnered an Asian Film Award nomination for Best Composer at the Hong Kong International Film Festival for Jodhaa Akbar. Rahman was one of over 70 artists who performed on “We Are the World 25 for Haiti”, a charity single to raise emergency relief funds in the wake of the 2010 Haiti earthquake. He later went on to being named one of ‘Tomorrow’s World Music Icons’ in August 2011 by the UK based World Music Magazine Songlines and, still continues to succeed in everything that he does.

A R Rahman has won two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, four National Film Awards, fifteen Filmfare Awards and thirteen Filmfare Awards South in addition to many other awards and nominations. His popular album, ‘Vande Mataram’, is one of the largest selling non-film album to date.
