Positioned across from Beach Park, where many find a welcome interlude among the waves, is the Shrine of our Lady of Matara, formerly known as St Mary’s Church. Built in 1907, the statue of the Blessed Mary and Child is said to have belonged to the Portuguese era dating back to the 17th Century. The mystery is that no proper record exists as to who really sculpted the statue or which country it came from and many devotees believe that the statue itself is a miracle. The feast of Our Lady of Matara takes place annually.
