Inland from Tangalle, this natural rock monolith was a cave retreat of Buddhist monks dating back to 130BC. Today, the temple is an archaeological site, with caves holding a paintings and structures belonging to the Kandyan era. There are seven Viharayas within the complex, and allegedly, one of the 32 seedlings, germinating from the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi was planted within the premises. During the Dutch colonial era, it was called “Adam’s Berg”, as the Dutch believed that the tombs of Adam and Eve were located at the site.
