This rock temple, found 30 km south of Kandy, has a history that goes back to the 3rd century, during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa. It is believed that King Devanampiyatissa built the stupa and planted the Bo sapling. The temple also has inscriptions and paintings depicting various Buddhist stories. There have been recent enhancements made to the temple, such as a wall with elephants constructed in 1986.
