Wallflowers: Sights and Sounds of Singapore

Time Out says

The intrepid group of artists and creatives behind the multi-disciplinary project Wallflowers: The Sights and Sounds of Singapore is back with two more episodes that pull back the curtain on our country's neighbourhoods. This time, they will also be running a series of workshops at The National Gallery to get you updated on the best video and sound recording techniques to create little documentaries of your own.

Since they started Wallflowers in August 2020, local musician Cheng Jin An, visual artist Elisa Liu and a host of other creatives have released four short films and sound libraries starring Tiong Bahru, Toa Payoh, Geylang and Sungei Buloh – and now with two new videos featuring charming Katong and historic Queenstown added to the mix. With the aim of encouraging Singaporeans to pay greater attention to the little things in life, they rely on recorded visual and sound snippets of daily life in the neighbourhood played to original scores and visual art of found objects and location-based art installations.

Keen to record your own neighbourhood? Join three workshops conducted by Wallflowers in March. On March 19, Cheng Jin An will take you through the Sound Walk Workshop to learn about how to record found sounds and tips for post-production. Cinematographer of Wallflowers SG Alvin Thoo will carry out the Video Walk Workshop on the same day, where you'll pick up street photography tips, composition techniques and storytelling best practices. Finally, Elisa Liu will present the Mixed Media Art Workshop on March 26, to guide you through idea curation, composition techniques and way to add personality and meaning to your works.

All workshops will take place at the Rooftop Studios of National Gallery Singapore, costing a token fee of $5 to reserve a seat. To sign up, visit EventBrite.
