Taking the phrase “whatever it takes to win” to new lengths, Svetlana Kuznetsova hacks off her own hair during a 2016 match against Agnieszka Radwanska. According to Kuznetsova, her ponytail had been hitting her eye and affecting her game.

Best "turn-of-events" moment

Dominika Cibulkova undeniably stunned during her debut in 2016. The Slovak scored a surprising 6-3 6-4 win over then-World No. 1, Angelique Kerber, and ultimately clinched the championship title.

Year with the most number of debuts

Last year saw three singles players make their WTA Finals debut. Elina Svitolina was the first Ukranian ever to qualify, and battled fellow debutant Caroline Garcia. Latvia’s Jeļena Ostapenko also entered the event for the first time.

Curtains closed

Swiss legend Martina Hingis announced her retirement from professional tennis at last year’s WTA Finals. The 37-year old’s illustrious career concluded with a World No. 1 ranking in doubles with partner Latisha Chan, and 25 career Grand Slam titles to her name.

Last year’s WTA Finals was the most well-received yet! A whopping 133,000 attended the 10-day festival.

Her sister may be better known as a fashion icon, but Venus Williams is definitely stepping up her sartorial game. The tennis pro came decked in a show-stopping studded mini dress and strutted down the purple carpet at 2017’s WTA Finals Gala Evening.

Year with the most number of No. 1 players

It’s no secret that 2017 was one of the most eventful years in women’s tennis. A record three World No. 1 players qualified for the WTA Finals after solid personal seasons — Simona Halep, Garbiñe Muguruza and Karolina Pliskova.

Here to stay

One of the most consistent performers in this year’s Porsche Race to Singapore, Simona Halep is the only player to have qualified for all five editions of the WTA Finals Singapore. She has also amassed a steady following, having won WTA’s Fan Favorite Singles Player in 2017.

Best player comeback

Despite past injuries and even an autoimmune disorder, Venus Williams brought her A game to the 2017 WTA Finals, after seven years of failing to qualify. She battled Caroline Wozniacki in the final match and ended the 2017 season ranked World No.5.

Perfect partnership

Russian duo Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina picked up the WTA Finals Martina Navratilova Doubles Trophy in 2016. When asked why their partnership works, Vesnina responded, “When me and Katya are both motivated and ready and healthy, we are a very dangerous team.
