On top of a restaurant and a shop specialising in Peranakan accessories, clothes, homeware and pretty porcelains, The Peranakan is made complete with gallery space, The Peranakan Gallery. With the two-year closure of the Peranakan Museum, it's good to know that there is another alternative spot for the curious sorts. Not many know that Orchard Road is one of the original Straits Chinese enclaves in Singapore. The new place is where one can explore and immerse themselves in the rich history and culture of the people, tracing the 500-year-old story of the Straits Chinese population in Southeast Asia.
Find yourself in the setting of a real Peranakan house and be greeted by a typical Peranakan shophouse façade complete with an ornately-carved pintu pagar (fence door), a traditional privacy screen placed in front of the 'home’s' main entrance. Inside, you'll find more props and authentic paraphernalia that lend a realness to the learning experience.
