What's Hari Raya without some song and dance, and a bit of drama? To finish the month-long celebration on a high note, Pesta Raya returns to the Esplanade with a lineup of engaging programmes from the Malay community.
The yearly affair is eulogised for championing Malay arts, heritage and culture, spotlighting the best of contemporary and traditional theatre, dance and music from the Nusantara (Malay Archipelago). And this year, it celebrates and explores stories that keep its rich culture alive.
Traditional storytelling forms and modern sensibilities intertwine at Pesta Raya. Singapore Malay wayang kulit group, Sri Setia Pulau Singa will be weaving the tale of an ancient king with puppets and modern ambient soundscapes by artist duo Kicau-Bilau. Hear the classic tale of Bangsawan Bispuraja performed by three generations of bangsawan (a form of Malay operatic theatre) performers, including modern-day star Tanty Yushida. Other performances run the gamut of Awang Batil (a form of musical storytelling), indie music, and family-friendly craft workshops.
Whichever you choose to sit in for, the beautiful tales told will warm the cockles of your heart. Check out the full programme on Esplanade's website.
