They say you don't notice design – until it's bad. That may not be entirely true, as stellar design can amaze, inspire and galvanise action. Whatever it is, now there’s no looking away, because Singapore Design Week is back to shine the spotlight on the very best of design in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

The festival is back after two years with a brand spanking new vision. Coalescing around three pillars – Design Futures, Design Marketplace, and Design Impact – the 10-day festival is simply bursting with talks, tours, exhibitions, workshops and symposiums. Through these, it will uncover lifestyle trends, innovative and impactful design solutions, and the future of design through Singapore's own pioneering endeavours. Here are some event highlights that you won't want to miss.

Design Futures Symposium

Come dream of a better and more inclusive future at the Design Futures Symposium. Formed under the curatorial direction of Paola Antonelli, Senior Curate at The Museum of Modern Art in the Department of Architecture & Design and MoMA’s founding Director of Research & Development, this anchor event will bring together the brightest designers and thought leaders from Singapore and around the world for engaging discussions on design and technology – and the industry's role in overcoming the world's most critical challenges.

When September 20.

Emerge @ Find

Southeast Asia is simply overflowing with design talent. Emerge @ Find is a first-of-its-kind platform to showcase the established and emerging talents from Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. Curated by Suzy Annetta of Design Anthology, this event is your chance to be among the first to see brand new works from over 50 rising designers in the region. The sky's the limit here, with innovative works such as a chair and lamp made by Bandung-based Adhi Nugraha which are made from reprocessed cow dung, and a lamp series created from agricultural waste by Filipino designer Stanley Ruiz.

N*thing Is Possible

We trust that you're no stranger to the Indonesian hospitality and lifestyle brand Potato Head. This time, it has partnered with award-winning firm Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) to co-curate N*thing is Possible. This regenerative design showcase is taking over the National Design Centre to show how waste and offcuts can be transformed into beautiful and functional artwork and objects. It also documents Potato Head's journey to a zero-waste lifestyle, accompanied by panels and workshops to inspire the same practices among participants and businesses. Other collaborators include renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, American artist Futura, Jakarta design studio BYO Living, and Bali-based environmental engineers Eco Mantra.

Re-Route Festival

Take a walk through Little India and witness first-hand how design can uphold heritage. Re-Route by Plus Collaboratives is a creative placemaking festival that includes food tours, design experiences, traditional craft workshops, and collaborations with food businesses in the district. These have been designed to take you off the beaten path and in touch with the lesser-known facets of Little India' cultural and design history. Highlights include sound installations along Serangoon Road by artist Li Chuan, a Sporting Social Club recalling the old racecourse, interactive installations that bring the old New World Amusement Park back to life.
