REVIEW, August 18:
It seems like apt timing to be showing 2:22 – A Ghost Story by the Singapore Repertory Theatre during the Hungry Ghost Festival in Singapore. The two-hour supernatural thriller keeps you on the edge of your seat (or your hands over your mouth, for some of us) as the great storytelling unfolds by award-winning writer Danny Robins.
A young couple, Jenny and Sam, are excited about their new lives – moving into a new home and renovating it, with a baby in tow. But what makes it all unsettling is every night, peculiar sounds of someone moving about the house can be heard, most often through their baby’s monitor, and always at 2.22am sharp.
Set in a generic area of Milton Road in England, the creative set design, lighting flashes to depict change of scenes, and slow motion movements of the actors showing time-lapses give a feel of a Netflix thriller where you don’t have to press “Next Episode” as the flow seamlessly does that for you. It keeps you wanting more, always thinking what’s going to happen next.
Punched with clever humour, eye-roll sarcasm and a believable cast of friends whose lives you readily delve into, 2.22 – A Ghost Story is a must-see for everyone, even those afraid of horror stories. It raises uneasy questions: what happens when your spouse doesn’t believe you, which wins the battle between logic and the supernatural, and do the dead attach themselves to real-life things or just memories?
June 19:
2.22 – A Ghost Story by the Singapore Repertory Theatre is one thought-provoking supernatural thriller that’ll keep you perched on the edge of your seat. Jenny and Sam, like all young couples, are excited to move into their new home. The kicker is this though: every night, peculiar sounds of someone moving about the house can be heard, most often through their newborn’s baby monitor, and always at 2.22am sharp.

It’s a fleeting thought that first-time parents have been through – what if they hear something they shouldn’t have on the baby monitor? If your spidey senses are already tingling, then you’re in for a real treat. Sit back and watch as this theatrical experience unravels, with the couple staying up till 2.22am to suss out any supernatural ongoings.
2.22 – A Ghost Story by award-winning writer Danny Robins brings you the quintessential recounting of a supernatural thriller. But unlike your typical jump scare flicks or gory slasher movies, you can instead expect a flow of clever humour and non-stop suspense. As the creator of hit BBC podcast The Battersea Poltergeist, it’s through Robins’ own life experiences that he digs deeper to unravel the truth behind these instances – where the unexplainable will get your pulse racing.
The play also relates paranormal experiences to the everyday life, with 2.22 – A Ghost Story tackling the intricacies of human nature and relationships. Not only does this award-winning play address the hot debate surrounding supernatural existence, it also poses an interesting question: what happens when your own partner doesn’t believe you?
From August 15, tickets for 2.22 – A Ghost Story by the Singapore Repertory Theatre start from $50. Enjoy 15 percent off when you purchase SRT’s Watch with Friends package, with a minimum of four tickets.
