Screening: By Design by CAKE

Advertising

Time Out says

Surround yourself with art at home with a screening of By Design on SISTIC Live. Graphic design, media art and performance meet in playful collaboration in this performance-centred art experience. Conceived and directed by CAKE, graphic design artists Vanessa Ban and Amber Vittoria and media artist Zach Lieberman are invited to create new pieces in collaboration with live performers.

The screening showcases three videos, each featuring a work by an acclaimed international media/graphic artist and an actor responding to the work of the artist. The first one features award-winning Singapore actor Noorlinah Mohamed responding to the work of American media artist Zach Lieberman. The work focuses on how movement and animation can create an emotional response in the human encounter.

Singaporean graphic designer Vanessa Ban’s work peers into gendered spaces; exploring mobility, hierarchy and visibility through the medium of design. This video features coded symbols and messages etched into the physical environment created by Vanessa Ban, and Singapore-based Australian actor Edith Podesta responding to the work/environment.

The last video focuses on the works of American illustrator Amber Vittoria, whose designs advocate for self-discovery in order to embrace the fullness of one's colourful dimensions. This video features blown-up inflatables of Amber's works, where Singaporean actors Siti Khalijah and Andrew Mako perform and interact with Amber's design.

For the uninitiated, CAKE is a contemporary performance company committed to seeding and engineering works and excursions that embody the experience of performance. Perhaps you've heard of the Running with Strippers series, an exploratory space that serves to investigate contemporary modalities of artistic expression reflecting the multiplicities and diversities of lived experience, cultural influence and worldviews – offering performance-based experiences in unusual spaces of creative experimentation.

The show was previously sold out at The Studios – but has been brought online for everyone to enjoy. So gather a group of friends, plan a night in and enjoy the performance from the comfort of your living room.
