Neon lights flicker and beckon, yielding the chance of forbidden love or an encounter with a pimp. Geylang returns for a second staging at this year’s Singapore Theatre Festival, with four stories set in pre-independence Singapore. To-be prostitutes are baited by mamasans, a Chinese and Malay couple inflame relations between both ethnicities when they fall in love, a single mum gets swept up in the political tumult, and a gang leader falls into drug-fuelled violence. Fall into their haphazard lives in this play, performed in English and peppered with Malay and Mandarin dialects.
