It's not uncommon to see buses dispending groups of Japanese tourists into YY Kafei Dian, who make it a pit stop in their packed itinerary to get a traditional coffeeshop experience.
Situated on Purvis Street, YY Kafei Dian is known for its old school goodies, chief among which is its cloud-like and fragrant kaya toast that comes in a set ($3.70) with rich coffee and two half-boiled eggs. It is also particularly popular with the office lunch crowd, who descend on the shop hungry for an affordable and delicious meal. Their menu is extensive – expect all sorts of Hainanese rice dishes, noodles and zi char options. Highly recommended are the Hainanese chicken rice ($4) and claypot e-fu noodles ($5.50).
To round off your meal, don't miss out on YY's sugar donuts. They're made fresh in-house and wonderfully fragrant and fluffy – hits the spot when you're feeling a bit nibbly during the late afternoon hours. The donuts tend to sell out by 4pm however, so don't hesitate.
