Tucked away in a row of shophouses near Clementi stadium, W39 Bistro & Bakery is conceptualised and owned by 20-something sisters Jasmine and Jamie Lu. Here, they combine nostalgia-tinged décor with a menu of upscale Western options, such as seared tuna with avocado salsa and trout caviar ($12.50), duck confit ($19.50) and baked lamb rib ($24) as mains. Other hearty options like their baked caesar salad ($10) topped with a smattering of shrimps and a poached egg with a gooey heart, and the grilled saba mackerel ($20) on a bed of warm spinach take things in a more simple and homey direction. The cosy home feel is backed by the décor, which is filled with vintage curious sourced by the sisters from websites like Etsy.com. There’s also a selection of reasonably priced toys and sweets (think Ring Pops and Magic Pops crackling sugar) to fill a small mama shoplike corner by its cashier, giving patrons a dose of retro-rewind.
