This café is nothing if not charming, with an atmosphere that’s half-baroque salon, half-English shop, and a ‘trolley’ full of bite-sized cookies that a hostess wheels around for sampling. The English tea cookies are pleasantly floury, with no eggs. The bold flavours are sometimes delicious, like lychee and lavender, and sometimes too extreme, like tom yam and nasi lemak, which even in sample-size were overpoweringly spicy. None of these tongue teasers are on the menu, but available to purchase by the tin. Instead, the menu is full of elegant tea cakes and includes an extensive, if pricey, list of teas to pair them with, as well as a smooth vanilla ice cream. The Three Queens cake was moist and rich, flavoured with orange peel and soaked in a potent combination of three liqueurs. It came beautifully presented with whipped cream, mint leaves and fresh fruit – as it should have for $20.
