For the odd hours when the hunger bug strikes, there’s always the trusty convenience store we can count on. But beyond just the iconic Slurpee and stocking up on instant noodles, 7-Eleven has a pretty extensive selection of snacks to choose from. From premium Japanese treats to popcorn flown over from the United States, here’s a sampling of our favourite snacks.

Grilled scallop mantle ($2)

It might not look the most appetising, but these chewy strips of scallops pack quite the umami punch. The texture starts off a little tough and sinewy, but stick with it – the flavours build up as your gnaw through the soy and chilli roasted scallop.

Japanese cocktail fresh lemon ($5.90)

We like this drink for its value – at under $6, you get to enjoy a refreshing cocktail suffused with brights lemon notes, and doesn’t taste overly sweet. Bonus: it’s loaded with 9% ABV, making it a highly affordable drink option.

Caramel popcorn snack mix ($3.90)

The addition of salty pretzel sticks and potato chips are a great counterbalance to the caramel sweetness from the popcorn. But we just wished that there was more salty crunch than popcorn in the mix.

Cheese snack with cod fish ($2)

Strange at it may sound, this is a combination that works. Soft, creamy, salty cheddar and mascarpone cheese are mixed with chewy bits of codfish to lend a unique texture that makes munching on it a joy.

Peanut butter-filled pretzels ($2.50)

The outer salty pretzel coating snaps in a satisfying crunch, revealing a sweet peanut butter middle. The filling tastes nuttier than it is creamy, which is our only gripe.

Almond and dried fish snack ($1.80)

The anchovies, sourced from the seas of Japan, is marinated with black sugar and wine to lend a sweet, savoury edge. It’s doesn’t taste overly fishy, and comes paired with crunchy almonds to create a varied texture.
