At Keong Saik Bakery, which has locations in Keong Saik and Chip Bee Gardens, modern pastry concepts are blended with local flavours and heritage. Their pastries reflect this fusion of influences – the baker’s croissant cubes (from $6.30), for instance, have decidedly local flavours, such as muah chee (peanut mochi) and orh nee (yam). The design of their signature pastry, the sor hei ($5.40), is also inspired by local heritage – it is named after the hair-combing ritual performed by the majies who lived in Keong Saik. If you’re looking for more traditional bakes, Keong Saik Bakery also has a lineup of loaves and buns like rye sourdough loaves ($5.50), brioche loaves ($8), and English muffins ($3.70 for three). Other options on offer include whole cakes, cookies, tarts, cruffins, and savoury sandwiches. By Vianne Chia
