Great World City might not be looking that great these days, with renovations underway to prep for the opening of its Thomson–East Coast line MRT station, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't pay it a visit. There has been a string of new restaurant openings as well as the launch of Meidi-Ya Supermarket, the second branch of the Japanese megamart. Over at the redeveloped part of the mall lies Ho Fook Hei, a casual quick-service eatery serving up plates of soy sauce chicken and other Cantonese delights.
Its speciality rose wine soy sauce chicken ($19/half, $35/whole) is brined overnight before it's poached in a braising liquid of soy sauce, herbs and spices with a touch of rose wine added after. It's best paired with a plate of Hong Kong-style egg noodles ($3.80) made especially for the restaurant by a local supplier. Don't forget to pile your plate with heaps of Ho Fook Hei's crunchy chilli sauce that it puts on every table as well. If that's not enough, order up plates of honey-glazed black barbecue pork belly ($13) and cod fillet steamed with old ginger sauce ($24.80) or a bowl of shrimp dumpling soup ($8.80) to complete your meal.
