If the names Boon Tong Kee and Nam Kee ring a bell, you’re likely familiar with Singapore’s unofficial national dish, Hainanese chicken rice. Delicious as they may be, the more recognisable ones are not often halal-certified for the Muslim community in Singapore to enjoy. Sure, it exists. However, it’s often generic food court fare that serves more as an option for undecided diners or to satisfy a craving rather than something you'd travel across town to enjoy.
Cue Hai Ge Ji Hainanese Chicken Rice, Singapore’s latest halal chicken rice joint started by local celebrity rapper, Sheikh Haikel and his wife, Anna Belle Francis. And yes, that is indeed a clever play on his name, if you were wondering. Opened on July 7 to much fanfare, this fifty-seater eatery is the talk of the town not only for its quality food and authentic taste, but also for being a possible equal to other big names in the field. A single portion of their signature dish will set you back $8, going up to $13.80 for a set with thigh or drumstick. Other things on the menu include shredded chicken congee for $6 and chicken and prawn horfun for $10.
As it stands, some have already rated it the best halal chicken rice in Singapore. Many reviews praise the tenderness of the deboned chicken, which are halal premium chickens, and the aromatic fragrance of the steamed jasmine rice –checking off two important factors to a perfect plate. This is not to mention the traditional recipes used and specially-trained Chinese chefs. With its popularity seemingly warranted, curious palates might want to head down to try it out for themselves.
