Japanese restaurants are a steady constant in our little red dot. But once we bar those with a hefty three-figure price tag per diner, we’re left with a mere handful of quality Japanese restaurants. Thankfully, that’s not at all the case at Chojiro Osaka Sushi Restaurant: these folks pride themselves on staying affordable while doling out exceptionally fresh sashimi cuts and premium sushi platters. This chain restaurant started out as just another kaitenzushi joint in Osaka, but today, they’ve got more than 60 outlets – the Capital Square one being their very first outside Japan.
It’s their range of sushi sets that most would flock down for, with the cheapest starting from $15.99. Those looking to splurge will enjoy the Arashiyama Set ($45.99). It’s an instant winner with a selection of premium sushi: ootoro (fatty tuna), ikura (salmon roe), and a hefty slab of anago (saltwater eel) included. Each set comes served with a chawanmushi and miso soup.
Those looking for variety can opt for the Chojiro Plate ($27.99), which comes with an array of beautifully-presented dishes. All are small in size but their cooked dishes have got the flavours down pat, ranging from grilled saba (Japanese mackerel) to tempura prawn. This plate also features their fresh sashimi, with a scaled-down chirashi don and an ikura bowl.
Yet, it’s their overflowing ikura bowls that’ve clinched them a spot in our books. Prices start from $29 for their ikura salmon sushi, but the price is well-justified for eight rolls of salmon sushi – since it comes with a generous, non-stop cascade of ikura. Those looking for a real treat can try the Ikura Hokkai Don ($59), which comes with Hokkaido sea urchin, Zuwai crab meat, and salmon.
