Located in the ever-exciting Tanjong Pagar stretch where most restaurants thrive at night, Champion Bolo Bun stands out as the world’s first Bolo Bun concept store catering to hungry folks during the am. With a laser-focused vision on serving up quality Bolo Buns, this nook doesn't play when it comes to freshly baked bread as you can expect piping hot buns coming out of the oven just about every fifteen minutes to match the demand from snaking queues.
Dining in? The 70-seater three-storey shophouse sports a cosy Instagram-mable space that screams contemporary minimalism with retro wood and rattan finishings of a classic Hong-Kong style cha chaan teng.
Founded by Hoh Loyi, this 22 year-old baker-entrepreneur was inspired by her deep interest in bread making since coming of age which saw her formally pursue the subject matter at the acclaimed China Grain Products Research & Development Institute in Taipei. With an unshakable resolution after graduating, she did the unconventional and managed to weave herself into the traditionally male-dominated cha chaan teng industry via an apprenticeship at Hong Kong's Best rated Bolo Bun shop (Kam Wah cafe).
Buns here are a tweaked version of the classic, attuning to Singaporeans' love for fluffy airy buns instead of the firmer version you can find back in Hong Kong. But what stays true to style is the sweet buttery 'pineapple resembling' top crust that gave the humble bun its rise to international fame.
